Needing on mail?

I recently ran Scarlet Monastery - Cathedral as a 39 Hunter, and the Scarlet Chestpiece armor came up, so I rolled need. I thought that I'm about half a level from being able to use the mail chestpiece, I should need it for when I ding. At the right I'm leveling, I probably will be wearing it before Monday, but my group didn't think so. They said I was an idiot for rolling on stuff I can't use, and they tried to kick me. Am I right in this situation?|||the real issue is thats not a hunter piece at all, it's a tank piece.

if you're going to hit Need, the item should have Agility on it.

they probably thought your were needing in order to auction it.|||Quote:

Ah. What exactly makes a piece a tank piece? I don't really understand.|||It's dependent on the stats on the piece.

As a hunter, you want Agility, attack power, crit, hit, haste. Strength, intellect, and spirit (and even a piece that's only stamina) are useless to you.

Not a lot of mail below 40 has agility on it for that very reason - the only classes using mail and needing agility for the most part are higher level hunters and shaman. Below level 40, most mail is going to be strength and stamina, with some intellect tossed in for paladins.|||The stats that are relevant to Hunters (roughly in order of relevance):

- Agility

- Hit rating

- Critical Strike

- Haste

- Mastery

- Stamina

A Hunter piece will always have agility. So any mail (or below lv40 leather) that has that is yours and if it's an upgrade to what you have you can press 'need'.

However, gear that has strength, intellect and/or spirit isn't for you, but for Shamans (and below lv40 for Paladins and/or Warriors).

A bit of a grey area is mail gear with strength and agility. It's meant for an Enhancement (melee) Shaman, but if the agility by itself is a serious update for you you might still want it. In that case have a look if there's an Enhancement Shaman in your group, and if so ask him if you can need.|||Quote:

I haven't seen Hit Rating, Critical Strike, Haste, or Mastery. What do each of them do for me?|||Quote:

Perhaps they're only available at lv80+ gear, not sure. But you'll come across it soon if you keep leveling. Don't worry about it until you reach level 85; just try to equip the best mail with agility that you can find (mainly from quest rewards).

Once you are lv85 you will start collecting (PvE or PvP) gear with these stats. For this you save gear (from boss drops and by gathering points/emblems), and then you use gems, enchants and reforging to optimize it. This is quite a specific thing and when you're this far you may want to look up how to do this (and/or ask again here) .

In short (and simplified):

- Hit rating improves how often you hit a target that's a higher level than yours. If you're lv85 some dungeon bosses will be lv86-88, and you want to increase your hit rating enough so you can hit him 100% (assuming you hit him from the back so he can't block or dodge your attacks). For this as a Hunter you need 8% hit rating coming from gear.

- Crit rating (or Critical Strike) determines how often an attack will do extra damage (say, double damage). The more the better.

- Haste increases your attack speed slightly and improves your focus regeneration. Most Hunters believe that it's not as important as hit (to 8%) and crit, but there are those who say you should have enough Haste to fit 3 Cobra Shots in the cooldown time of Explosive Shot (in the case of SV).

- Mastery is a new stat, and considered the least important for Hunters (though still useful). It does different things for different talent specs, but for all 3 it gives you more damage (in different ways).|||The simplest thing to do is just ask yourself one question:

Does the piece have more agility than what I currently have?

If yes, it's probably an upgrade.

If no, it's probably not an upgrade.

Until you actually get to 85 and start gearing up for more serious content, you really don't need to go beyond the above rule.|||Quote:

Say it's a piece with about 50-75 more armor but maybe 4 less agility, should I go for it then?|||Quote:

No, armour is a lot less important for a hunter than agility. You have a pet taking the hits for you.
